Hear from veterans, families, and visitors whose lives have been shaped by The Argylls’ legacy and preserved through the Museum’s work.
“I would never go again, believe me. I would never go in combat again…
Three things are important to me: I want to live to be a hundred; and this book’s got to be printed; and this [Regimental] Museum’s got to be opened … I guess somebody will walk through … some day and say, ‘Well hey, I wonder what it was like. Maybe we’re going to find out what it was like.’ and I hope they’ll never find out …”
“the most interesting, enjoyable, sometimes frustrating, but always rewarding, days of my life, were spent, attempting to train you [The Argylls]…
…Doing my best to lead you in battle, and at all times protect you from two enemies, The Germans and our own Higher Command … I was always of the opinion that it was my good fortune to Command the finest group of men in the Canadian Army.”
“I’m very proud of my unit. In fact, I don’t think there’s anybody more proud than I am of the Argylls…
We have something — particularly the boys that fought in the war — we have something … [You] can’t define it; it’s not even like a brother. You’re closer in a way, and it’s hard to define. But there’s a very strong, loyal comradeship that I don’t think you’d get anywhere … I don’t think it’s available [elsewhere]. You’d have to experience it … you’re depending on that man, and you get so you know that you can trust him to the full extent. And this is something that money can’t buy…”
